Replacing them seems to work well.

I don't think that there would be any SAFE way to do this - locking it and then pushing the engine to high RPMS might result in alloy fan blades flying through the engine compartment and/or someone's head. I really don't think the fan could take 5-6K RPM, even if it was perfectly balanced. Imperfectly balanced, it might lead to premature water pump bearing failure.

I have wondered, though, why no one has made a replacement non-clutch flex fan. The ones installed in 70's hot rods looked nice and were supposed to fold at high RPMs, reducing drag; they were very light. I had a stainless steel one in my hotrod.

(Of course, they did an excellent job of surgically cutting off a lot of fingers also; fortunately, not mine.)

lol

You can always ditch the fan and fan clutch and go with an electric fans like the hotrods do.

If you want to try to 'mod' it, check my page, MENU#20 where the Stu Ritter mod is shown.

You can also refill it with Toyota silicon; do a SEARCH and you'll find some threads.

I'm planning on re-filling mine and on advice from this site went to two Toyota dealers but all they had was 3000 weight, people here suggested 10,000. Living in a desert I'd still like to use the 10,000 weight, where can I get it?

Jim,
Do you ever get down Santa Monica way? I've got some ( one liter) that I'd gladly share. Sorry, I don't want to ship, but, hey, it's free. Email/PM me.

10,000 wt silicone oil can be found in most hobby stores. Try the following places:

http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXFTX5&P=7
http://www.buytraxxas.com/product_info.php?products_id=2034 - you will need two of these bottles.

You may also want to try your local Hobby Town to see if they have 10,000 wt. silicone oil. These are used in the differentials of RC Cars. You can also get 20,000 and 30,000 wt silicone oil at these places.

I recently rebuilt mine and am in the process of installing it in the vehicle. Also, refer to th e following thread for details of rebuilding a fan clutch.

Viscous fan clutch - rebuild

can you fill it without removing fan, and if not is it hard to take fan off?
