Do Mercedes run at higher RPM's

I ask this question because I have a 1992 300E. I bought it about two months ago and it seems like a great car. When on the interstate at about 70 mph it is pushing 3000 rpm's. My wifes 2005 pontiac Grand prix is pushing just over 2000 rpm's. I know my car is getting into the fourth gear and it is a v-6. My question is range that I am talking about normal. Also, it was a flat area and just cruising.
