Can Mercedes keys be copied?
I'm restoring an 85 300 D Turbo. Right now the key situation is a little goofy, there are two keys--however they dont unlock one of the door locks. I realize the standard procedure is to submit your regis/title to a Mercedes dealer , which I'm willing to do, but until I get the keys/locks standardized to the original configuration, I would like to make copies, since I'll only be using them for awhile. Can Mercedes keys be copied? Thank you RC |

Local locksmiths in CA want about $35 to copy one of the high security keys, but the local dealer only wanted a little over $20 for ordering a key from MBZ-New Jersey. It took about a week for mine. It sounds like you have a car with a replacement doorlock, = two different ones. Perhaps you can order two tumblers with keys so both doors will be the same. Perhaps PartsShop can help you. If you have the non-high security key, any locksmith can cut you a copy for less than $5.00. The high security blanks are available on ebay auctions for about $10.00

I had a tough time finding somebody who had the key blanks in stock but finally found a lock place that carried ILCO blanks. (84 300D)

Keys
Both of my keys are ILCO, locksmiths can get them. The key code is MB 39 and X 83, for a 1983 300D.

85 300D keys
I had a little trouble finding someone to do them well, but i found a guy who took the time and let me test the keys until he got it right. They are not very high security on these models he told me.
It took him over 3 times to get one that worked (my copied key was very worn down) but it can be done cheeply by a non-M-B cutter if they are good! Good luck! |

For 85 300D, the key should be the same as 83/84 300D and it can be copied by any Locksmith. Some shops do not want to do it because the key is hard to clamp down for duplucation. For that reason, it is hard to get an accurate cut and the Locksmith may have to cut serveral keys before a correct cut is made.

For an 85 300D, our local locksmiths can do it for you at USD6.00 a piece.
Send us a copy of your key, and the location of your MB,
