Problem found: no shift after trans. oil change
Re: my earlier thread. My indie shop owner stayed late one night to try figure out why my 240D auto would not shift after I had asked them to do a fluid change in the transmission. Turned out to be the simplest reason: the mechanic who had worked on my car happened to knock out the vacuum line to the modulator when doing the work! The owner glued it back in and it shifted fine. For good measure, he ordered a genuine MB filter kit, dropped the oil pan (no filings), changed the filter, and refilled. All is well now!
I noticed when the mechanic was filling up the tranny, he put the car on the lift slightly off the ground, and had it in Drive (the rear wheels were turning) when checking the fluid level. While I was looking at this, the owner came out and told him "put it in park to check the level". Couldn't believe it. Next time I take my car there, I'll insist that mechanic never touch my car again. To make up for the inconvenience of a week delay, the owner did not charge me labour to replace the filter and refill. So he's in my good books again! Glad my beloved 240D is back on the road, running and shifting fine. WHew... Cheers all, and thanks for your thoughts and good wishes while I worried over this...
