124 wagon rear wheel bearing

I've heard that S124 rear bearings are a real PITA to replace. Has anyone here DIY'd these units? I believe these can't be done in situ unless one uses the special MB tool specifically designed for the S124. I have a shop press, but would like to know if there are any specifics tips I should know before taking my car out of commission and R&R-ing a sloppy LR bearing.

TIA

AT dealer we have special tools that allow the job to be done ON the car..

You will need to remove the complete rear HUB assembly & have the wheel flange pressed out, bearing pressed out, & then the new bearing pressed in. Then the new bearing must be supported properly while pressing the flange back into the bearing. About 4 hrs later you won't have that noise!

While you are there have the bearing/bushing for the lower control arm replaced as well.....

Thanks, that's just as I suspected. Sounds real similar to R&R-ing the front wheel bearings on a fwd VW; with the correct screw press, it's a job that can safely be completed in situ in a matter of minutes. Without that tool, it can be an ordeal, with the possibility that you'll destroy the new bearing when pressing the hub back in.

btw: What's the factory book time for this job should I opt to have the dealer take care of this for me?
