Locking differential into a non-locking W124

My rear Diff is howling. I tried draining and running synthetic, still loud. I'm looking for a used one. My junkie found a locking Diff for $350.00. My car doesn't have ASR or ASD. Can I use a diff that has the option and not hook up the electronics?

BTW it's for my 92' 300D

It should work. My 92 has the ASD option. It appears all the electronics are in the engine bay. There is a hydraulic line that runs from the engine bay to the differential. You would need to plug this hole in the diff. Somehow the hyd fluid and gear oil are kept separate inside the diff.

YOU would need the donar car & then BUY a very $$$ PUMP to supply the fluid for that system...NOT a good idea...look for a used diff from a 16V 190E if you want limited slip.

Thanks DOC, what years or numbers should I be looking for?

In the USA the 16V 190E was only around for 2 years...1986-87, all of them had LSD.

Zeitgeist 06-27-2006 10:44 AM

What's the final drive ratio for the 16v LSD?

Would it technically be possible to convert a TD with its existing tandem pump to also operate an ASD differential?

mbdoc 06-27-2006 11:09 AM

yes & no....The ASD differential may require 4 ABS sensors...the regular ABS system needs & uses only 3...how are you going to all of the computer systems & wiring to work for both systems..

PLUS you still need a donar car to get "plumming" including solenoids, accumulator, & computer.

Hey Doc,
Is this plug & play? A no mods or parts swap? What other Diffs will fit (without mods) in my car.

More Info, Looks possible

Don't know those people...BUT Dave M on that site doesn't know MB differentials...WITH/OUT hydraulic pressure the ASD differential wouldn't offer 35%(new) lock-up....worn clutches would drop that to 10% ....With pressure 100% lock-up...Installing that unit would be a total waste of time & $$$$

t walgamuth 07-10-2006 09:48 AM

the 16v ratio is 336.

will the 16v rear fit in my 84 euro?

and i assume it is a straight, not externally actuated, lsd. right?

The USA 190E 16V differential was a 3.27/1 ratio....BUT ONLY the ring gear carrier will fit & only with a ring gear spacer will it WORK......

yal 07-10-2006 01:22 PM

By the way just to correct something. The ASD only requires 3 ABS sensor. I know I have one.

t walgamuth 07-10-2006 09:45 PM

so these abs sensors can they be added easily to a non abs car?

Not unless you find a way to hook up the ABS computer, ABS hydraulic unit and all its various valves and piping. The you will need the ABS hubs for the front and an ABS rear diff.

No would probably be the easy answer ;)

Yal,

what year and model do you have with the locking diff?

I wonder if I could get it to work with my 85 300SD's ABS....

that is what i was afraid you would say.

i had a complete abs setup on the euro 300d i parted out and decided it was too much work to take off and reinstall on anything else.

I actually have a Euro 230E 1988 W124 with ASD.

Eh... that's not what I said, nor what I meant. The idea was to get limited-slip functionality (35%), not full locking (100%). Getting full locking on a car not originally equipped with ASD from the factory would require massive modifications and $$$. However, using the ASD diff as a core, you can get LSD function - without hydraulics. It's not easy and not cheap, but possible. I'm planning on doing this to my car this winter.
