air conditioning settings

I have a 1998 SLK 230 with approx. 83000 kms. on it. The car has performed flawlessly for the last 7 years. Last night I noticed that one side of the climate control worked properly in all modes but the other side only blows hot air. Are there any suggestions as to how to remedy this situation without going to the dealer?

Thanks and I hope that you are right. The only thing that concerns me is that the passenger settings will only work at full heat, there is no in between setting for the temp on that side.
