I thought the differential ratio was changed when MB decided to go with the 1st gear start....

There was a modification at the flange where it attaches to the Differential flange. The old style can be subbed for the new, but the new won't work with the old.
I put an older axle on my '92 and it worked fine. I don't know the year of the change, but you could figure it out from the part nos on the World Pac sellers sites. Steve |
