W124 windows will not close with door locks
I recently picked up a 1992 300E California car with 145k. I love everything about it, and would love it more if everything worked. Right now Im trying to get the windows to close with the door key. The drivers windows will roll all the way down with one push, and all windows work perfectly at the switches. When I try the door lock trick, nothing. I have held the key (all 3 keys actually) in the lock position, nothing.
I've tried everything I've seen posted and recommended. Before I go and replace the CCM I was wondering if anyone had a new idea. I also decoded my VIN, and I didn't see an option listed for this function. Can anyone tell me if this is something that is listed in the option codes? Perhaps my car just doesnt have the function. I've also tried the "tunnel" functionwith the recirculation switch, and nothing there too. One other problem, probably a bit more urgent, 10mpg!! The car runs strong, smooth, recently passed smog. Only issue is that if it has sat for more then an hour, I have to turn the ignition twice to get it to start. First try fires and dies immediately. Second try runs fine. Sounds to me like a faulty fuel valve leeking and loosing pressure to the injectors, but with this car nothing seems that easy, and I'm not sure if this explains the milage issue. I've never seen a puddle of fuel after the car has sat, so I dont think it's hemoraging gas. Can anyone on this fine forum help a newbie out? FYI, I did spend hours going through the forums reading similar issues before posting. I just haven't found issues exactly like mine. |
Welcome to the forum. The window closure is an option that you might not have. Did you hold the key in the drivers lock turned all the way to the right for at least 5 secs? That would close the windows if you had that feature. Not sure what you mean about Tunnel function.

The "tunnel" function is an option on mostly european versions, when you hold the recirculation switch on itll close sunroof and windows, hold the switch off, everything returns to previous open condition.
Yes, I have held the key in the locked position for an extended period of time, nothing. As for it being an option, wouldnt it be listed in the option codes? All I've read gives me the feeling that it was installed on all 1992 cali w124s. A definative answer would be most appreciated, at least I can move on to the next issue. |
This is probably completly unrelated, but perhaps not.
The so-called "Convience feature" on my '96 E closes the windows if I hold the IR transmitter button or hold the key in the lock position for more than two seconds. But for this feature to work, the windows must be synchronized (presumably with the CCM). They may lose their synchronization if the power is absent. The owner's manual describes the synchronization procedure. |
I dont have keyless entry, so no IR transmitter. As for the synchronization, this is not listed in the 1992 manual, but thanks for the input!

A quick reference to determine if a 124 vehicle is fitted with convenience feature is to look at the door handles, the chrome strips are a dead give away. You did say that your windows do work with the one touch "Down" command via the switch group. This may be a good sign because the control unit is responding to the “Down” command. Have you tried operating the "Convenience Control” from either the passenger door or the trunk lock? If not, try it at the other two points and let us know what the results are.
 |
Mine only works to globally open the car from the drivers door IF and ONLY IF everything is closed... if I leave the sunroof popped up and come back to the car and try to open the windows globally they won't... UNTIL I close the sunroof with the lock position, THEN I can globally open the windows.
My global close feature works everytime however. :D I am going to have to try this "tunnel feature" |
a lot of w124 alarms were disabled.
if yours was disabled the window close with key feature will not work. extreme gas consumption may be fuel distributor-BIG BUCKS. get it diagnosed by a good m.b. indy mech |
Thanks for the feedback, this forum rocks!
My handles all have the chrome strip, so I should have the function. I have tried it with all keys at all entry points. nothing. I've tried it with all open, I've tried it with everything closed. nothing. The antitheft is hooked up, I've set off the horn a few times opening the trunk when the doors were locked. As for the fuel distributer, I'll have it diagnosed this week, and let you know. |
On the 1993 400E I had, it was listed under the options when I decoded the VIN. It also appears when I decoded the vin on my 1996 SL600.
|
Thanks Justinwrock, but could you tell me what the code number is for that option, and how it is listed?
I really appreciate this, it's kinda driving me nuts at this point |

Interesting lead Strider, I do have an aftermarket head unit installed. I'll have to pull the unit and check for loose wires.

I just tried the window close feature in my 1992 300CE. With the sunroof closed, I turned the driver door key to the right and the windows closed.
I have never heard of this feature before. Thanks for the info. |
Well, I ran the VIN of my old 400E, and it didn't pop up in the options list. I thought it did, but i guess i was wrong.....

First of all the alarm and vacuum locks are activated by a micro switch on the vacuum element, and the convenience feature is activated by a switch on the door handle itself. The convenience feature is separate from the alarm. I have yet to run into a 90 or newer 124 without this feature although I can't swear it iwas an option. You can check easilly by removing the bottom section of the rear seat. The control module is located under the seat on the driver's side.

I have a 1991 300CE W124. I have a few items which I think are related to the Convenience Control Module:
1) My driver's window will not go all the way down with the auto-mode stopping about 10cm from fully open (always the same position). If I hold the switch and it will go all the way down. .until it gets atIt did begin fully opening a few times only to resume not fully opening but now it stops at a different position (but again, now always stopping at this new position). At this stopped position, the auto-mode will not work until the window moves down about 10-15cm and then will resume auto mode or it will fully open if I hold the switch. Passenger door seems to work fine. Note: driver's window motor has been replaced before I acquired the car. 2) I discovered the open and close with the key feature. It worked last night after driving the car at the driver's door and the passenger door. (I didn't try the trunk.) This morning... Nothing at the doors or trunk. 3) The driver and passenger door window do not open slightly when respective the door is opened and close when the door is closed. I am not completely sure that this is supposed to happen, but that is what I have read. 4) The passenger door lock does not seem to arm/disarm the anti-theft. At least, when I lock with the driver's door, and unlock with the passenger door, it sets off the alarm. Question: Is the interior light supossed to illuminate when the car is unlocked? Mine doesn't but seems like it should. Any advise on these issues or if they are related is greatly appreciated. Any way to test/recondition the convenience module? From what I have read it may not be completely solid state and my have relays in it. |
I had the same hot/warm start issue with my 1989 300E with 95,000 miles. I changed the spark plugs and it got better. Changed the fuel filter (has only been changed once) and now it starts on the first try everytime without hesistation. Also, I did noticed a significant decrease in mpg's and started to smell gas. Turns out the rubber fuel hose from the fuel filter to the metal gas line was cracked and leaking. Ordered the special fuel line hose online for about $22.
I thought your oxygen sensor may have been defective but you said your car recently passed a smog test. I would, however, still suspect the sensor since it does regulate your air fuel mixture which may be running too rich at times. |
