According to my owners manual, I should have an automatic adjust day/night rear view mirror inside my car - but I don't. I thought the E500 came loaded, so I doubt this was an option. Any one have a comparison?

Also, can an auto adjust mirror be retrofitted?

An auto adjusted mirror can be retrofitted. I have included an E class auto dimming mirror to my C class.
I don't know, however, whether the auto dimming mirror was common material on the E500...

No auto dimming mirror

The 500E did not come with an auto-dimming mirror.

Michael,

Thanks for the info, but why does it appear in the owners manual? There were some differences between the 92 and 94 model years, I suppose that the paperwork was updated faster than the hardware.

MBenz,

How did the retrofit go - complicated or easy? Are there any threads on how to do this with the minimum of pain?

Thanks for the quick response.

Steve,

Here is another thread about the auto dimming mirror:
W126 - Modification of Rear-View Mirror

It is a easy DIY modification and if you have any other question after reading that thread, just let me know.

Bring it by my house and drop it off for a few days so I can test the mirror's function thoroughly. I could have a definite answer for you by Saturday.

Scott, thanks for the offer to handle the modification - as you are aware the will be a great deal of testing involved. However, I have decided to to use the information MBenz provided (thanks for the short cut to the thread). Looks like the biggest challenge will be putting my hands on a mirror - I'll keep you posted.
