Question on 1986 230e power windows
First up,let me say what a great site you have here. Very informative. If someone could assist me that would be great.
I have a small problem with my W124 series. It's a 1986 230e and the fuse for the power windows keep blowing. It's the G fuse on the right hand side of the fuse box and controls the front passenger window and right rear. I tried replacing it but it just continues to blow. When I purchased the car 8 years ago the previous owner had the same thing happen. His mechanic went and replaced both power window actuators, telling him that both motors had blown at the same time (I kid you not) Does anyone have any thoughts on what may be causing this? |

Quite often with age the wiring insulation starts to get brittle (or the wire itself does, forget which) and the wiring will crack and can short out. This would be in the rubber conduit in the door hinge area.

i agree with him there is a big possibility that there is a short somewhere because a blown fuse could mean a deeper problem i terms of electrics

Thanks for the feedback lads.
I've removed the fuse box and discovered the remnants of old fuses in the bottom. I replaced the fuse but no good. What I did notice happening is this. Key out of the ingition. I fitted a new fuse - the doors were shut and the fuse didn't blow. Open either of the front doors and the fuse blows. I don't know if the interior light is a factor in this. The fuses blew with the light in the on and off position. The rear window is still down. I guess tomorrow I'll grab 10 or 20 fuses and attempt some kind of process of elimination. |

Try to pll off one side of the rubber conduit tube (on the 2 affected doors) and gently pull on each wire in the conduit to try to find a broken wire or 2.
