01 CL500 Power Steering Pump - BIG RATTLE NOISE!!

Hello all,

Have bought a CL500 with 35.000Km last month and already have a problem!

I am a W140 pre owner, so I'm quite used to Merc problems but...

In this case the problem is a huge rattle noise coming from the steering pump (yes, the one that also feeds the ABC system!).

The problem is that the noise is not from the pump itself but from a sort of a ring that is electrically soldered to the pulley in 4 very small spots, 2 of these spots are loose and this is what makes the pulley rattles like crazy...

I enclosed a pic, and my question is if anybody knows what is the function of this ring?? It looks that one can just take it out and everything becomes normal again...

Thanks in advance,
Folgado

I'm not exactly sure what purpose is served by the "ring" on the pulley, but I'd guess that it must provide some balance, or vibration damping (like a flywheel). After all, that's a tandem pump. One for P/S pressure, the other for ABC.
