I have a 1987 190e 2.6. The blower for heat/AC isn't working right. It sometimes works when I turn the ignition key to position 1 (don't start it), and switch on the fan. It then cuts in and out for 15 seconds. When I start the car, the fan doesn't work at all. What does this sound like?

The Experts only work the day shift

Sounds like time to get the book,"RTFM" it is the best quickest and cheapest in the long run- even if it is a few bucks. Try to get a factory manual, it is very good.

Maybe there is something wrong with your ignition switch. With heave key chains, they can wear over time.
To my knowledge (atleast on the new MBs), the climate control should not operate in ignition switch 1, only 2.
That is:
0 - key in ignition, no pwer
1 - power to most consumers
2 - everything on (computer on) (this is when engine is running)
3 - start

Are we on the same level?

Mine does this also. Probably needs new switch and lock.
Keys on keyring can wear out tumblers on lock.
I usually turn keys slightly counterclockwise after starting
and fan works.

let me clarify, ignition switch is fine.

I have no problem starting the car. I was just trying to illustrate that the blower doesn't work in any key position. The fact that the blower sometimes works leads me to believe that it is an electrical connection or relay. Any ideas?

Have you checked the blower switch in the dash. It is easy
to get to and replace if bad. Grab the blower knob and
rotate with pliers (with jaws protected with rag) and pull
switch knob towards you. Carefully pry off trimplate and
remove switch and check. Its been so long since I did this,
cannot remember if I took radio out part way to do this,
but this should give you an idea how to do this. I believe this took me about 45-50 minutes to replace switch.

Hope this helps,

Gary
