87 260E tranny help

Hi All,

My 124 is shifting too early from 2nd to 3rd. It flares most of the time. What should I check or adjust and how? I'm guessing has to be fixed. Any help from the board would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

has the fluid ever been changed?the cable to the throttle linkage if tightened will hold the gears longer.the modulator adjustment on the left side of trans will adjust the fluid pressure that makes the shift[11/2-2 turns] and mostly get rid of your flare.

2-3 flaring

Fluid was changed 30k miles ago, but I should prob change that first and see what happens. Thanks for the modulator tip. Anyone have a pic of the modulator?

It's the only round thing on the driver side of the tranny. Follow the vacuum line from the engine bay to the transmission. It ends at the vacuum modulator.

There's a rubber cap in the middle of the modulator. Pry it off. You'll see a bar sitting in something that looks like a castle nut. Pull the bar, which is acutally a T handle, so it clears the turret. Turn the handle as much as you think is safe then press it back in place. I think it's CW to reduce flaring. I wouldn't go more than a quarter turn at a time but that's just me. The handle pulls all the way out. Just push it back in if you pull too much.

I'll remove the slack from the bowden cable if there is some and adjust the modulator. I'll definite r/r fluid and filter... thanks for all the help...
