I have a 190e 1993 with 6 cylinder trying to change out starter top bolt very hard to get to.I have the bottom out size 17mm, is there a special tool for top bolt or a trick to get to it or a page on here to use book is not much help thanks

you will need about 3 ft of 3/8in extension and i believe top bolt is 10mm allen so a socket with10mm allen, breaker bar and about 2 or 3 ft of pipe to slide over the breaker bar.make sure that you get the 10mm allen in securely before applying pressure.oh! it makes it a lot easier if car is on lift.

Thanks David everyone says allen but I'm looking at a 17 mm nut it goes threw the bellhousing & screws into the starter itself Scott

There seems to be some variations on the hardware used. Typically it is an allen cap screw, but sometimes a mechanic will decide to use a hex head, or even the factory had a few variations from year to year or model to model. Main point is to try to get under the car, preferably on a hoist so you can stand up, and use a really long extension, I always ended up needing a flexible U joint on the end of that also to get the angle just right. Best tip is to try to get a long 1/2" drive extension and zap it with an impact wrench to zip it out of there. It's tough.

I bought a nice socket from Snap-On to get the bolt out. It is a 17mm with a ball type flex joint built in (3/8 drive). Part number is IPFM17B.

Ha Rick with that ball socket from snap-on did u use it with a extension or could you get it from the top side Scott

You need to get at it from below with a long extension as stated in previous posts, but this tool handles the angle and tight clearances well. Go to the Snap-On website for a picture.

I remove the starter on my 190D with a swivel headed ratchet and a 17mm socket. No extentions. I removed the airfilter box and got it from under the hood.

Thanks guys for all the help just got it off! Before I put the new one on a vaccum line came off & I need to find out were it goes it comes out of the inlet manifold right behind the oil filter it is plastic clear it is about 9" long looks like it pulled out from a connector.Is there a vaccun page on this site 190e thanks Scott

Scott, Not sure which vac. line it would be. There is a line that runs from the top of the intake manifold runner cylinder #6 to the transmission, but that would be longer than 9 inches. If you don't get a reply from someone I can check a friend's 89 190E 2.6 to see if similar.
