turn signal problems on my new 84 190e
The left signal works fine but has to be manually cancelled.
The right signal only works the rear, although it flashes twice as fast. (also needs to be manually cancelled) The bulb is ok. I'm tempted to just replace the combination switch and go from there. Any other ideas? |

That switch is expensive. I would find the problem before just throwing parts at the problem. SOunds like a connection problem somewhere in the right turn signal circuits. I would study some schematics and then start tracing circuits to find the problem.

combination switch
Thanks, I just looked it up and fully agree. I am not wery good with electrical problems. but will give it a shot. I have the Haynes manual with the schematic. I don't really know where to start.

Is there another cause for the signal not to cancel?

The issue with the canceling is mechanically related. And for that reason alone the only fix might be to replace the combo switch. I would remove the steering wheel and have a look and see whats going on with the cancel mechanics. If some little plastic thing is busted, well you have no choice. But it might be repairable.
As for tracing the electrical problem. Start at the defective lamp and work your way back to the source. Use a meter to verify the presence of voltage along the route. Somewhere along the way you will probably find the offending connection.

I would pull the bulbs and switch them from side to side...see if that does anything....
i had a 280se that wouldn't "cancel"... just lived with it...

switched the bulbs already. same thing. When the defective side is turned on the bulb in the dash and the rear bulb blink twice as fast. Is that something that was designed to let the driver know that there is a malfunction?

turn signal working again but still fast
Well we found a broken wire at the socket, re-soldered it, and it works! Still flashes fast even with all the bulbs working. ?? At least it's working!
Also removed the sterring wheel to look at the combination switch. (to fix the non canceling problem) It's not the same as in the Haynes manual. Probably 'cause it has cruise control. So we put it back together untill we find the proper way to remove it. The cruise control lever has been broken off. Another reason to buy a new comb. switch. Haynes shows to remove three combination switch retaining screws. I only see two. Where the third screw is shown is where the cruise control is. The other two screws only hold on the shroud. Any one know how to disconect the combination switch that has cruise control? |

cruise
yes lift out the cruise switch first[it slides upward] then you can take out the combo switch.i think the cruise has 1 or2 wires conn to the combo.
