124 Windshield Wiper Replacement Alternatives?
The single wiper on a 124 and other models looks "interesting" but sometimes doesn't perform up to expectations. We know we should periodically clean the shaft and motor from old grease.
But with advancing technology new wiper arms are available. For example TireRack's new catalog shows a few alternatives. The "Valo" Ultimate Wiper is an interesting one piece design. Has anybody tried it or others that perform better than the original? Bob |

I like the "Valeo" on my truck, but not on the M-B.
The reason is, the wiperarm has a guide, that helps move the blade. The other wiper's bladeholder is not wide enough, and therefore tends to move around inside the guide too much. This in turn causes some slapping of the blade, whenever the arm changes direction. ![]()

Yeah, I had the exact same issues. It is not a good match - - the profile of the aero blade is too low. I did finally get the correct adapter for MBz and I have fitted ANCO blades to both cars. They last much longer than the BOSCH and don't streak/smear like the BOSCH. The ANCO blade can be had for less than $10. I think they have 5 different products that will fit. The little adapter is $0.33. |

I'm using Bosch Micro Edge on my 2 Merkur Scorpios. They came with a bunch of "adapters" for different arm widths and appear to function well. However, I haven't had them on long enough to comment on longevity. But with NE icy winters, ice on the rubber usually tears them up before they wear out.
Would using a 1" shorter blade increase the cleaning efficiency of the swept area? The search continues. Bob |

The ANCO blades I am running are 24". I don't believe they have a 25" blade. The loss of swept area is at the base of the windshield where the drive mechanism is. |

I am using two different blades on our W210 cars...a summer blade and an all-season blade. The all-season blade is the AeroVantage with P/N 91-24. These are widely available. I've purchased them from Autozone for $9. The summer blade is their top-of-the-line wiper and it's called HydroClear. Part number is 99-24. The HydroClear blade is not suitable for winter use - - it has a special coating that will be destroyed almost instantly when it hits sand or ice on the glass. The gentleman did not recommend these blades unless you could be assured they would not encounter road debris. These blades are much tougher to find. They got a bad rap since people thought they were failing prematurely during winter use, and nobody seems to stock them. I had to order it on-line. I think it was around $15 + ship. This is the tricky bit: the required adapter is P/N 48-06 and I got lucky and the little mom 'n' pop auto part store across from my office has a small plastic box with 15 common ANCO adapters....nobody else had these adapters. They are about $0.33 each. Without the adapter, you're SOL. This setup is quiet, the blades last far longer than the BOSCH (which I've been thru many of) and the sweep is better...no more schmearing. ![]() You can purchase refills for the AeroVantage and they are cheap. I am quite certain there is a traditional winter blade. They also offer two value blades that could be fitted. I was told to stick with the AeroVantage product line. ![]() This U-channel design is a standard mounting cfg. The only thing different about the Benz is the lack of the locking tab that typically locks the blade to the arm. Without the locking tab, the blade is loose. Since this is a standard size, I suspect many other brands of blades would work assuming you have the locking clip (#48-06) pictured below. ![]() #48-06: ![]() I checked the FM/ANCO catalog last night - - it indicates the W124 car uses the same parts as the W210 cars. |

Anybody Checked this out on an SDL?
My 87 SDL has different length blades on left and right sides, both "specials" (read: mucho $$$.) I presume you could use the same trick?

Just went to my local AutoZone and they had a box of Anco adapters under the counter - gave me a couple 48-06's with my purchase of 2 blades. I'll be very interested to see how these do. I've been disappointed with Bosch blades so far, in terms of streaking and chattering, so good to have an alternative - and an inexpensive one, too!
Thanks, uberwgn, for sharing these tips!

My pleasure. Please report back when you determine how they're working for you. ![]() Good to know that some Autozone stores have that little box with reqd adapters. My local store claimed they didn't know what I was talking about (nothing new here ![]()
