![]() ![]() I was driving my car (560SEL 1989) when suddenly the ASR lit and the pedal went harder. The speed was 100KMPH (62.15040398 Miles per hour). I had the ASR problem on my previous 560SEC 1989 and was one of the mail reasons that I sold the car. I turned off the engine and waited for 5 seconds then turned only the ignition on and then I hear a little ticking sound coming from the driver side (maybe from the fuse box, not sure), and I turned on the engine and see the ASR still lit and the pedal still hard. Please instruct me what to do or how to fix it. The car is only 160K and I make periodical maintenance. But people here don't know how to fix the ASR problem on old cars. Thank you in advanced.

In the US, at least, ASR was not available until about 1991, if memory serves. Maybe models produced for other countries had it earlier???
In any event, when you describe the pedal having a harder feel, are you describing the accelerator pedal? Can you describe this feeling a little more?

Check the wires connected to the throttle linkage pot as well as the throttle actuator. You will find that the insulation is rotten. It could be your problem. There is a computer that controls the ASR. And as we all know it could be the problem as well. There are a lot of components that are involved with this system and its hard to say for sure where the problem is without some trouble shooting and diagnosis.

I believe if you pull the covers on the ABS/ASR unit you'll find some relays in there..pulling one of those disables the ASR. I currently own a 91 SEC w/ ASR and I Hate the feature... I have an ASR defeat switch installed and turn it on (off) every time I get in the car.
Just another item to save you from yourself that gets in the way more then it helps.. I find Right as things are getting interesting it will kick in, and when you are planning for it not to intervene the chassis becomes Very upset. Perhaps it's good for drivers who don't like driving but fortunately I don't fall into that category. Jonathan

I have an ASR system which at times has previously been problematic. I've done a few things;most improved the problems. Replacing the upper engine wiring harness solved it for awhile. Also readjusting the throttle linkage to the correct open throttle and wide open throttle positions repaired alot of the systems ability to periodically engage. I have thought about replacing the wiring to the ETA also; that seems somewhat involved. System will sometimes engage; I reset it by restarting. Stangely enough it will usually come on before the engine has reached proper operating condition. I'm no expert just an owner tired of paying the repair :fork_off: takers. Good luck

The control module is located above the brake pedal. Its a rectangular aluminum enclosure with a plug on one end. It also controls the cruise control. So if you yank it, no cruise. Same with the acutator. If you disconnect it mechanically the cruise control is lost.

Thnanks !!!
Right noe, thats sounds like a fair trade off to me. Hell, i've never turned the cruise control on anyway, not even once. So, all i do is unplug the harness to the module? Man, i hope that kills that damn asr ! LOL LOL LOL

Try it. I cannot say for sure if it will work. It will certainly disable the system. But the ripple effects it will cause I dont know.
