Why does the 124 wagon have 2 fuel pumps?

At the end of 6 months of on again off again work on the car I was test driving it and noticed a small fuel leak. It's the pump next to the gas tank and its corroded to the point of leaking. I will replace it, but I was wondering why the wagons need 2 pumps, and the sedans only one?

By the way, the well documented maintenance issues on these 124's sure are true. I just completed the following over the past 6 months with the car off the road. Never consider one of these cars unless you can DIY!

Rust repair
New windshield
Head Gasket
Engine harness
O2 sensor
Cat back exhaust system
Throttle actuator rebuilt
New rear hydraulic accumulators and associated plumbing due to corrosion
New blower motor
New alternator
Rear caliper rebuild
As well as other more routine items.

Somewhere around $5000 in parts alone. I did all the work.

Since I did the rad, water pump and tensioner a little over a year ago all I have left to fail is the AC system.

O well it rides nice, and I like the 16" 2000 CLK rims I just picked up for it.

Thanks,
John

MOST of the CIS-E cars used 2 pumps due to high fuel pressures & the demand that caused early single pump failures.

The sedans of that era also had 2 pumps.

About the only car that used 1 was the 1988-91 300SE(L)'s & they were very noisy!
