ATF+4 for 722.6 transmissions

A thread on another forum suggests that ATF+4 can be used in place of MB dealer fluid for 722.6 transmissions.

They cite that Chrysler LX models use the same transmission, and ATF+4 is specified for use in those transmissions. If so, then we have a low cost substitute for the expensive dealer fluid.

hehe, that thread over there was started by me!!

anyway, i ended up buying 8 qt of OEM fluid but needed only 3.5qt for the first change. I'll drain again this weekend and refill.

btw why does atf smell like rotting fish?? even the new stuff has that smell..

You only have to change it like once or twice during your ownership of the car. I wouldn't chance a $4k tranny.

At one time, many years ago, a lot of ATF was made by using Whale blubber.
Maybe they retained the smell from those days, because we're so familiar with it.

What's the ATF spec for a Crossfire? Doesn't it have an M112 and 722.6?

Yeah, the Crossfire is German made and has an M112 and 722.6. My other brother has one with the supercharged motor. It's pretty dang fast, with 350-something horsepower. Brutal ride with those low profile tires on Michigan frost heaves, though.

The Chrysler five-speed automatic is based on the 722.6, but is manufactured in the midwest of the U.S. I recall reading when it was introduced that some (non-specified) modifcations were made. So although it is very similar to a 722.6, it is not literally identical. As a result I'd be hesitant to assume the ATF for that trans will operate correctly in the 722.6.

It appears we can use the new 722.9 fluid and it's compatible with earlier transmissions per MBz training material. It's ~1/2 the cost of the 722.6 fluid from what I can see.
