B3 clutch pack - 722.361 Transmission

Hi

I'm going to be removing the transmission from my 350SDL soon to fix a 'missing' reverse gear. As diagnosed it's the dreaded b3 clutch discs which I plan to replace.

I'm trying to order the parts from Phil right now and in his system he's only got the packs for the K-1 and K-2.

I've read through the ATSG manual which doesn't specifically cover the 722.361 and also the manual which uses a '95 C220 722.3xx transmission as reference. Now I assume the 722.361 is not some anomaly with different way to spin the gears in reverse.

I realize I cannot preemptively buy the outer disc since I need to measure the clearance for proper engagement but I'd at least like to get a head start on getting the part no.'s lined up so Phil can get me what I need quickly (this is my Holiday break project).

Anyone have part numbers/explanation of why other models have the b3 clutch pack in the list and not mine?

Cheers

Bob

90% of the time replacing the fiber discs will bring the clutch pack back to the proper height..measuring with a dept guage is the only real way to know.

Of course you will need the front pump gasket & seals..I always replace the K1 clutches as well, that drum must be removed to install the LB3 clutches.

It is so cool to hear from someone who has actually rebuilt these units, intead of the typical tranny outlook of don't touch it, it is too complicated.

There is also a guy in Texas who carries parts and had technical support for MB trannies. He also has factory literature. Use the search function to find him. I have heard that the ATSG is not complete on the older MB auto trannies.

A shame that I'm in NOLA and I'll be doing the rebuild in DC. Maybe I can still hit you up for some tech advice if I hit a snag?

Any chance I can borrow the special tools from you over Christmas break?

I agree Doug. With my 350 I just can't afford to pay to have it done so I've got to go in there and do it myself. The forum gives me confidence like some beers and a few shots of whiskey. I would maybe hand it over to mbtechman for $500, but unfortunately tranny and car are in DC area and fix is going to be done before I repatriate to the NOLA area.

Bottom line is with right tools, time, and definitely this forum it can be done (I'm double crossing my fingers of course), and it's the only way to learn.
