EGR Removal?

Is it a good idea to throw away the EGR system on my Euro 85 500 sel?
We only get tested for emissions at idle, and the CO has to be less than 4%, so I dont think the EGR will effect that.
I think that anything to simplify the intake and vacuum system has to be a good thing right?

Also, I've taken my heads off and notice that there are small passageways between the combustion chamber and inlet manifold. What is the purpose of this?

Edit:
I should have mentioned that I run on LPG (propane) about 98% of the time.
