300E odometer problem

I have a 1988 300E with an odometer that stopped working. 71,239 true miles on the car before it stopped. It seem to "catch" the last couple of times I reset the trip odometer but then it just stopped this week. Speedometer works fine just no odometer. Is there a possible fix or will I just need to go the replacement route?

Thanks,

Do a search. There's tons of info available on this.

It happens, some people get a bit snippy when you ask a question that has been asked many times before. Fortunately, most of us don't want this to be a search-only forum, and will try to help. No offense brew, I don't think you meant it that way, but so it goes.

There is a way to repair it, but it is usually temporary unless you buy a replacement gear. The metal shaft that drives the odometer (internal to the speedo) slips out of a nylon gear with age, and the odometer quits. Resetting the trip odometer while moving seems to increase the probability of this failure also. The shaft can usually be pressed back in, but as it has already slipped off once, it usually will again in fairly short order. Common problem with VDO speedometers from the '80s, I've had it happen in several German cars.

The gear is available, and you'll probably have to search this and the diesel forum to find the source, and yes, the search here really stinks.

No offense to anyone. I simply said do a search (over two years ago) because the best info can be found with the search (IMHO), it is more complete and there's no waiting!

Another option is to remove the speedometer and send out for repair. There are several good repair shops and the cost is reasonable. I attempted to repair mine and decided to have a professional shop get it done properly.

my fault! nothing personal. I was searching forever and all threads I found said "search", this one just sent me over the edge. I found this and it was quite helpful but not complete. hopefully it helps somebody else. I got the odo out and found the slipped gear, I will try using some adhesive to fix it.

there were some threads about this issue a while back but most don't exist.
