Question Transmission 1992 300E

I went to the grocery store today and when I got back to my car and tried to back out, my car would not move. It seemed like something was holding it back. At first I thought I had forgotten to release the brake but that was not the case. I sat in the parking lot for about an hour, hoping the person in front of me would come so I could just drive out. I eventually had a couple of guys come and push me back where i go turn the wheel and get my car out of the parking space. My car runs fine in Drive. You would not know there was a problem. I don't want to take my car to the dealer and be told I need a new transmission when it might be something less expensive. Have anyone experienced this or does anyone have a clue as to what might be causing this.

Probably needs reverse clutches, which means rebuild time. Find an independent or tranny shop that is familiar with that trans and you should be able to get it done for around 1500. If you want to go the MB rebuilt way. They are supposed to cost around 1800. They are not discounted to the aftermarket so a dealer is probably the best place if you can get one to sell it to you for real list price.

Shop around. Those and used are the possibilities.

He most like meant the transfere case or the front diff' assembly. (?)

You need him to be more specific, or verify what you thought he said.

These 4Matic cars had their fair share of transmission problems early in life and dealerships replaced quiet a few.

Reverse gear needs fixing

This happened to me as well...
I took the car to an independant transmission mechanic, it cost about $800 (Australian dollars) to fix. No need to replace the whole transmission, just something specific to reverse gear. The prices that were quoted by several transmission shops varied between $5000 and $800.(AUD)
That was about 18 months ago, car is still running well.
While it's in being fixed, it's a good idea to replace the tailshaft flex discs as well.
good luck.!

How many miles on your E? More often then not I see it's the reverse clutch seals that have torn instead of the clutches being worn... 10$ worth of parts but requires tearing down most of the transmission to get in there..and while you are there it would make sense to replace all the clutches/seals etc..

As for a $-Matic transfer case expect to pay 15-2500 for one. They are known to go bad around 100K...no one ever changes the fluid in them so it's not to be unexpected.
