What is this tranny piece?
I'm now on Benz #3 (my wife says it's a sickness). I keep telling her that I'm just getting started compared to some of the guys on the list.
This one is a 1992 190E 2.6. I purchased it knowing that it had only reverse. I figured a bad transmission. But, the fluid was at the right level, was a perfect shade of pink, and didn't smell off (burnt). So I pulled the pan and everything looked great. No fragments of anything in the pan or fluid. Then I pulled the filter and a little piece (one inch long) fell out. I've attached a picture of it. Any idea what this is? Please tell me this is an easy fix (like "drop it in the fluid fill tube and it will seat itself" or something similar). Thanks. -Brett |

Hmmmm...no forward ...reverse only...I would say part of the uniclutch assembly....no ?
...and no, I don't think you have a 'fits back there'..kind of fix. If it's the B2 piston/band failure, it seems like it might be the band/piston rod. Heck, I'm just assuming. What does the collective think ? .

It goes between B-2 reaction valve and Band. Usually only falls out if band breaks (may only be partially broken, but still needs replacement if so).

B-2 band, reaction vavle - what else should I replace?
Okay. So if I can't find a transmission to swap, I'll be looking at a new B-2 band. I'm thinking that while I'm in there I'll replace the reaction valve, filter (of course) and gaskets and seals. I usually get my parts from ***************. I just checked and (depending on the transmission I have) it will be between $364 and $414 for the parts. (B-2 band=$210, filter&gasket=$17, reaction valve=$47, gasket&seal rebuild kit=$90 or $140.) Have I found the cheapest place? (The service there I've found to be very good.)
Have I overlooked anything that should be replaced while I'm working on the transmission? How much time should I set aside for this job? I've done a lot of car work but I have never torn into a transmission before. Thanks. -Brett Last edited by BrettS; 12-17-2006 at 10:37 AM. |
