Puzzling

1996 C220. Battery light (dummy) comes on when starting engine. It goes out after a mile or so of driving. Sometimes it comes back on for a short time. I've checked the volts to the battery. With engine NOT running battery registers 12.3 volts; with engine running and dummy light on it registers 14.2 volts.

What should the voltage be? Current volts doesn't appear out of line at all. Am I missing something?

Any ideas?

I would check for corrosion on both the battery terminal wires and the recharge wire coming from, the alternator. Also could be a weak alternator that drops voltage on occassion (thus the light turns on)

Good luck
