local locksmiths for your W124 keys?
I just recently had to make a backup copy of my only door/ignition key for my 1987 260E. That costed me almost $40 at the dealer. I am wondering if its really true that only 2 places in the world (Germany & US) can make these keys. Isn't there any local locksmith with a laser cutting key duplicator around? I mean they want to make money right? Demand and supply theory suggests that a smart locksmith would try to invest in one of these machines.

My 1995 w124 keys were copied by a local locksmith (a real good one) for $20 each.

At what point did the keys begin to have computer chips, etc. in them so that you could no longer just get a copy made by a locksmith? I know that many keys now are very complex and can only be obtained from the car manufacturer.

You might try another dealer - some of them are around $20. It would appear that you your dealer is pricing very agressively.
