1993 500SEL - what do you think?

At our local dealer on the "preowned" lot there is a 1993 500SEL 69,000 miles, black/black. It looks to be really nice. I am going by there tonight to check it out and drive it. The dealer wants $18,995. Kelley Blue Book for an excellent example is only $16,235 for a car with this mileage. I am sort of interested in the car but.....

According to the dealer this car is immaculate and has all the service records. It has just had the 70,000 mile service completed. I will look to see if evap. has been replaced and also if the recall work was completed on the front suspension.

Any thoughts?

93sel

IF all the work has been done the dealer should let you see the tickets. You cant tell if the evap has been done, spheres, Bose, it probably needs new bushings and engine mounts, hoses, rotors, caps, The of the 93 s still had a vib issue at 45 "cold" that was never really fixed, 95 s were lowered and the problem dissapeared. The price is a little high, my 92 has no current issues, just turned 80 and i have fixed all those things and still dont expect more than 17s. Any warranty?

Peter -

I am looking at a 93 500SEL w/ 116k. What was the "vib" issue at 45?

Anything else I should look for?

lol, my 97 C230 was purchased Starmaek 14 months ago, with 61k, and it was the peach of the lot. However, that 4cyl car has still had $6k in warranty work since then. I think anybody who owns an older V8 or V12 should budget $5k a year for repairs. Beware.

I just looked at a 1998 S420 with 75k miles listed for $17k. It looked and smelled like a new car. Their were like 2 stone chips on the hood and slight wear on the drivers seat. Well it was more like dirt/wear the interior was light gray. They also had a very nice 300SE on the lot for $9995. You can get a lot of W140 for your money these days. For almost $20k I would look for a late 90's example.

But I thought from all the posts on this forum the concensus was that after 1995 the 140's were cheapened to drive down the weight and price?

Hattaras- that sounds like a great deal on the 98' S420- are you going to get it? I really like the 92+ S-Class.

Good luck!

Bah. The W140 was changed a bit in 1995 they got a different climate control and a few other things. Lights door panals ect. You want a later W140 they break less, a 99 is better then a 92.

No I am not going to buy it. I was tempted as heck to trade the SDL in on it but I would have to take out a loan and I don't really want to. I think in another 2-3 years I might get something a little newer. I would really like a newer CL500 next. Those things look so sick in black, I just need the money.

How much????

The price is high. Way high. TOO HIGH.

Mileage or no mileage, that car is nearly 15 years old. I'd actually rather have one with a few more miles on it. Mercedes by and large hold up better if they are driven rather than parked.

Do not be afraid of mileage as long as the car has been properly serviced.

Oh, and I wouldn't buy from a dealer unless you just want to pay more. Find a private owner - they are out there.

Good luck.

Price is alittle steep. What does Edmonds say? They tend to be lower than Kelley.
