I have a whirring air pump now

No whistle today, instead it makes a whirring noise when running. Impending doom? What happens when it dies?

I guess that the bearing of the pulley is on its way out. You could remove the pump and replace the bearing. If you wait for it to fail completely it might block the polyrib-belt, leaving you stranded.
Good luck, bruno

My smog/air pump on my 300CE is making a whirling noise also. But it is only during the few minutes after startup and then it stops.

From what I understand, the clutch mechanism needs to be replaced. You can see them at mbpumps.com.

When I asked the owner if just replacing the clutch was a good idea (save a few bucks), he said that was the cheap fix since there are another 2 sets of bearing in the motor itself, so you might as well get a rebuilt pump where all the bearings have been done.

AFAIK the secondary air injection pump on your W202 is electric, not mechanical (belt driven). The W124's have belt driven ones. I don't think you've got a pulley on yours, so I don't think the bearing is the right diagnosis.

I've had the same problem with my C280 now for two and a half years. The pump makes noise for the first 45-60 seconds after starting and then shuts off. I'm just living with it.

Ok, thanks

Yeah, I think it is electric, and it's been doing strange things for 2 years. The whirring is new. I'm guessing the worst I would get is a check engine light when it goes south.

I've had the CE light for two and a half years now. I read/clear codes every so often just to make sure I don't have any other codes hiding there. I just can't justify the expense for what the part does.

Thanks, exactly what I was thinking. $400 for something that decreases emissions at startup. I'm all about being green, but.......

Glenmore,
I have the same sound, I think. It lasts for a few minutes at start. Sometimes there is no sound. Do you have the same?
Jason
