86 300E Slipping Transmission

Hello,
I have received mixed advice on my 86 300E Slipping Transmission. Slips btw 2-3 and 3-4, under light throttle, when cold. Fluid changed — no improvement. Dealer says drive it 'till it breaks. Stu Ritter 300E Bible says early rebuild can save ~$200 in parts. Can find decent independant to rebuild in Seattle. Car has 217k on the clock. I plan on keeping the car — am quite married to it.
What should I do?
Thanks, David

I was going to say too bad that a tranny in a 85' 380SE would not work, or I would sell you my car and you could use the tranny. Still in perfect working order, at 268K. If I cannot get my engine misfire to smooth out, thats exactly what I will do... sell it, despite the fact that I love the 22 year old tank.

Seriously, I do not think a rebuild would be too bad. When I was considering a 86' 560SEL with a slipping tranny, a local tranny shop quoted me $1600 for a rebuild.

Good luck.

My name is G-Benz and I have a slipping tranny (others in support group: "Hi G-Benz")...

...did the K-1 fix, replaced fluid twice (second with synth), but to no avail. Indie and I concur that it will be driven until it dies, then opt for a rebuild or replacement...I too plan on keeping my car.

I also have that nasty head gasket problem right now. Probably will pull the whole powertrain out this summer and deal with both issues simultaneously...

Thank you MBTechman! Where to I find the modulator?

Also, my local good indie tranny guys have a flat rate so drive it till it dies is now my one option.
