Smile 89 300se idle problem!

hi, i just bought my second Mercedes , my first is a 97 e420 that has been running trouble free for more than a year (knock on wood). the new car is an
89 300se with 130k on it. the car is in good shape for it's age. however it is hesitating at idle only when hot. i know this has been discussed extensively but i need the pro's input on this please.
i noticed that the economy dial is about 1/3 up when idling. i read somewhere that this is bad and it indicates a vacuum leak somewhere in the system.
the car runs very smooth when cold and at acceleration.
my question is how do i go about diagnosing a vacuum leak and is this a job for a newb like me. (i'm pretty handy but with little experience)
and second where and how should i look. and do you think i should meddle with the fuel injection.
i appreciate you guys helping me. you where always great help. thanks.
