Lightbulb How to make an own diagnostic?

I know my question could be stupid somehow but I'll ask it anyway to see the answer.

I'm willing to create my own diagnostic cables to be connected to the car and a laptop. I heared that Star Diagnostic is the best one. My question is that can I create my own cables and download a software to be used on these cables to troubleshoot MB all of W140 and above?

You don't say what year has your interests here. Older cars are easy. New cars are prohibitively hard. You won't come out ahead trying to one-off this.

Star is the factory system. I don't know if they would even sell it to mere mortals such as ourselves. Even if they did, it is quite pricey. Expect to pay somewhere around 10-15K plus 3K/year for the license fee.

Question

Thank you for replying Mr. Matt L. Let's say from 1992~1998 (W140).

Don't fall into the trap that I fell into a lot when I was younger. Yeah, I could do almost anything technical, but I got paid pretty good money for doing what I did best. With the huge effort this would take (even if you already have hardware logic analyzers, etc) in reverse engineering, you could make extra money doing what you do and just go out and buy one. Just reverse engineering the codes could take years - every conceivable failure mode on a complicated car?? This certainly would run into the hundreds.

From your credentials I think you're just doing this as a hobby. Correct me if I'm wrong. If so I think it's a lot easier and cheaper to convert your system to a more updated and more tunable system available out in the market.
