changing pads with SBC

My 2005 E500 wagon has SBC. The dealer wanted $650+ to change the pads. I can't seem to find any DIY info concerning the SBC and changing pads. Also, the calipers seem to be floating, somthing I have not previously encountered on any of my German cars. How do they come apart?

First, deactivate SBC with SDS or another software that can do that. You dont want the system to inadvertantly wake up while your hands are down there.

Its Simple to do...

Raise the car remove the wheels..

Either Un Plug the SBC Control unit OR Lock the car and put the key away..
Because IF one opens a door the SBC pump WILL Cycle and that can Hurt you IF you are working on the brakes

I saw a tool for sale for $200 which plugs into the OBD-II port and activates/deactivates the SBC. If I had one of these and didn't have a more useful tool to do this job, I'd probably pay the $200. Apparently, it would pay for itself on the first brake job.

What's wrong with unplugging the battery and then turning the key to the run position? Wouldnt that deactivate everything?

what's SBC?

SBC equals Sensotronic Brake Control. Brake by Wire.

I believe this has now been dis-continued.

You don't unplug the battery on a new car!

Go check out MBworld's W211 forums. Lots of those guys do this themselves and have it figured out.

Nate, even without power, the SBC reservoir is pressurized to more than 2K PSI. You need to relieve that pressure, if you're going to be safe. And of course, build it back up before moving the car, once it is back together. Although I suspect that the SBC controller will notice if it has no pressure and would default to mechanical mode (front brakes only, no assist).

Anyway, good riddance to that system.
