'87 560SL differential compatibility????

My girlfriends '87 560SL has developed a differential noise. It is a low wurring noise. A shop says it is the differential. I have located a new differential that I can obtain for 400. It had written on the top of it with white marker "stock 560SEC. This differential looks exactly the same on the outside. There is a number on the right hand side of the back cover that reads R1263510908GEGE on our existing unit, and the same number is on the new unit in the same place, with the exception of the GEGE at the end. There is another set of numbers on the rear of the case, bottom right, next to the cover, sort of on an angle. The existing reads 672795 2.47, and the new one is 0906499 2.47. My question is are these differentials interchangeable?? I'd hate to change this out and find out that they are not. Also is 400. a reasonable price to pay for an NOS differential.

I have also come accross another one, new in the box, that I can purchase for the same amount. It is for a different model. number on the box is 201 350 1003. On the case itself it is AMG 705364656/0036 20/90 ACHSGEH3,27ABS 201.034 A1350. Any one out there know what model this would fit.

Your help is much appreciated

Rod

For USA versions of the 560 (SL, SEL, & SEC), all 3 use the same part number differential. The MB part number is 126-350-14-62. NOT a casting number.

The other differential is MOST likely for a 16V 190E...very sought after differential!

Thank you so much for the info. I am new to Mercedes, and just starting to work on the car. I have always owned Porsches. I am going to go ahead and buy the differential and install it. Does any one know for sure how to isolate the problem to the differential. It does not sound like a wheel bearing to me, as it does not change pitch or loudness when turning hard corners. The flex plate is new. I guess it could be the drive shaft bearing. The low whurring sound lasts almost untill the car rolls to a stop. Any help to confirm my diagnosis would be great from the members. I am going to go ahead and purchase the other differential too, if you guys think I would be able to sell it on this forum. If I purchase the other sought after one for four hundred do you guys think I would be able to sell it for more. It is new, and in the box. There is also another one of these that looks new, but has had the cover removed. It looks unused inside, as there is absolutely no wear marks on the ring or pinion. It looks like someone removed the axle stub shafts, as they can be pulled out. Is there supposed to be retaining rings that secure the stub shafts?? I see a machined ring on the end of these. Any help at all would be appreciated on these.

Thanks again,

Rod

Not a 16V part...rear cover is for a 300E 1986-92..what ratio & does it have a tag that has "special oil" tag.

differential

iIt is stamped 2.47. Is this the ratio? It does have a brass tag with german writing on it. I have a chance to buy this differential, and a stock 560SL differential. Both are new old stock. Anyone know what they are worth on the resale market here?? If I purchase them, I would like to sell them on this site. Also, mine ended up not being the differential. It was the driver side rear wheel bearing. I am in the process of that job now. I wont be needing the 560 diferential, but if I can get it at a good price, I will buy it to re sell.

Thanks

Rod
