Cigarette Lighter Short - Best Way to Replace Wiring?
I have discovered a short in my cigarette lighter system on my 1992 300E. Right now I'm simply keeping the hot lead disconnected (and covered) from the fuse box terminal (Position 1) it's usually attached to. Any recommendation as to the best/easiest way to rewire the unit... or... feed in a new lighter altogether into the cab?

the hot wire will unplug from the cig lighter inside the car.

Thanks, Dave... I see 2 black wires going into the back of the lighter.... I'm assuming one is the ground... (do you know which one is which?) can I just lead a new hot wire back to the fuse box from the lighter... and are there any tricks you know of in terms of making that process as easy as possible?

Todd list your vehicle and year in your signature. You will get MUCH better answers Usually (at least in 80's models), the ground wire is usually dark brown (sometimes black). In any case, the ground wire will most likely NOT run back toward the fuse box. To feed the new wire, tie/attach/tape the new wire to the end of the old wire, and pull it through (ie, pulling the old on out pulls the new one in.). Good luck!

And by the way, you can usually find a multimeter at a generic tool store (harbor freight) for around $5. Very useful tool that you will need again down the road for something, trust me.

Thanks, Matt. I'm hoping the attached wire will make it through... I have to cut the wire off of the back of the lighter... it's soldered to the terminals on the lighter itself...
