check engine light

Please help. I have a 1993 190e. Just got it. Everything seems to be running fine. The check engine light came on after I had driven it about 300 miles. It stays on but I don't notice any problems. I am taking it for an emissions test tomorrow. ANy thoughts?? Thanks for your time.

* Problem with the check engine MIL is that it could be on for any of a number of things. Good news is that they are all emissions-related and don't portend some engine disaster.
* Give yourself any help you can by first checking for fault codes (at the rectangular data plug). Also check for on-off ratio faults (at the circular plug). Popular culprits are oxygen sensor, EGR malfunction, coolant temp sensor. Don't think that problems like a leaking fuel-evap system or a damaged catalytic converter will turn the light on in a '93 190E.
* Have read posts on this forum about getting the fault codes scanned at one of the parts stores if you don't have a scanner (maybe Autozone or Autowize?). Note that your car doesn't have an OBD data plug.

A lot of the 1993 190E's were California versions. That version has a "self-diagnostic" capability. IF your car is that version there will be a pushbutton & RED LED on the diagnostic connector at the RR of the engine compartment.

I thought in most emmission testing required states, a check engine light on was cause for failing the test? I dont have to test where I am, So I am going off what i have heard...
