'02 CL500 with Sudden Onset of Electrical Faults

'02 CL500, 48K miles. Vehicle has suddenly exhibited a bewildering variety of electrically related faults... all three brake and license plate lights are activated, even with the lights and ignition off. Disconnecting the brake pedal switch has no effect. Sometimes the backup lights are on as well; sometimes not. The window lowering mechanism for door opening no longer works. Electronic trunk closure system no longer functions. Rear window sun shade is inoperative. A fully charged battery drains completely in less than 4 hours, even with the brake lights disconnected. Fuel gauge no longer reads, at all. And instrument cluster warns that display is defective.

The IC was renewed 5 months ago in response to a recall. Had a lot of problems after that with many things that didn't work... all related to improper version coding by the dealer.

Current problems started following a heavy rain last week, through which the car sat but was not driven in. Arrived home to find the left brake light and instrument cluster illuminated and a battery sufficently discharged to prevent the central locking system from functioning. Renewing the battery resulted in the left and right brake lights illuminating and a strobe light flashing of the rear parking lights. The strobe effect eventually stopped but then the rear deck lid brake light illuminated.

Can't seem to make heads or tails of this. Obviously something got wet. Any ideas?

It sounds like either the rear SAM is malfunctioning, or it got wet. It's located beneath the rear seat. It's the control unit responsible for the function of the rear lights, sunshade, and remote trunk operation, among other things. Get the car checked out ASAP, by a qualified indie, or an MB dealer.
