W124 driveshaft support and bearing replacement

Anyone ever r&r the driveshaft center support bearing and the support itself?

When I accelerate hard, mainly in first, it makes a thunk thunk thunk and it's pretty loud. It's not the clack clack clack of a cv joint, and I just had the rear diff. mounts and flex disc replaced.

So, is this something relatively easy I can do myself? The local german shop is quoting me 360 total for everything. They already got 560 for the above mentioned work, I shoulda/coulda done that myself too. Oh well....

Etank,

Having just completed this exact job on my daughter's 190d, I can tell you that the parts run around $60, so that leaves labor of $300. I completed the job in about an hour (with a lift and air tools). It is not a difficult job, but some way to press the new bearing onto the driveshaft is necessary. Bring the car over and I will do the job for $359. Seriously, without knowing your experience, tools and work location resources, it's hard to say that you should or should not do the job.

Good Luck,
Tom

Thanks Tom-
While I don't have air tools or a lift (I'd have to use rhino ramps), I do have a lot of experience on my car and others, so I'm comfortable trying it. The issue of pressing the support in is the issue, hmmmm.....
I think I'll try it anyways, I need to get dirty with this car again. The last thing I did was re-glue some MBTex to the drivers door and the passenger map pocket, I need something that gets me dirty!
Thanks again
Mark

Etank,

Make sure that you look at those witness marks on the front and rear driveshafts. They need to be aligned correctly or the car gets the shakes. The procedure is outlined in the factory service manual. There are two slashes on one driveshaft and a dot on the other. The dot must be nestled into the the two slashes on reassembly.

Good luck,
Tom
