m103/m104 fan clutch removal tool - dealership price!?

I called the dealership to get a price on the fan clutch removal tool - thinking "oh, its just a piece of rod - it can't be that expensive"

I asked for the price on p/n: 103 589 00 40 00 they come back "You're lookin' at $52.61"

Thats outrageous!

Does anyone know the approximate diameter of that rod? I'll make my own for that price.

Thanks!

If you perform a search you will find many members have made their own tool or improvised. One member stated "on my 260E 1988 I made it from a 6mm diametre steel rod bended +/- 30 mm at 45degres, total length 300mm."

Like a lot of other members, I used an allen wrench when I removed mine on my '86 300E. One member used an old rat tail file with a bend on the 'handle" end. Any strong metal rod with a short 45 to 90 degree bend will work.

i used a standard allen wrench, and i had to shorten it a bit with a hacksaw so it would fit snugly. very easy and worked fine.

I've done the math: Manufacturing cost is about two bucks, but perhaps they charge the stocking cost. The item occupies a place in the part shelf for $0.10 per day with an average shelf time of 500 days .
