can't remove ignition tumbler, key not stuck
This is really pissing me off...i've done all the searches and still can't get the thing out.
1984 190D, I bought a new VIN matched tumbler with key.... It appears from everything I can tell from looking at the new tumbler and all the old posts that all I need to do is..... 1. remove the plastic trim ring, easy 2. insert key and turn to allow the holes/slots to line up 3. inset pin or stiff wire to depress spring 4. pull tumbler out So why does the tumbler not slide out when I insert the pins? Is there something else holding the tumbler in? Why ignition is not broken, key works fine, just trying to swap out the tumbler with a VIN matched key |
It can be deceiving when inserting the wire - listen for a distinctive "crunch" then unscrew the collar from the cylinder. Make sure your pin/wire/etc. is small enough to penetrate the interior release hole. It a common misconception making it through the first hole in the outer cylinder but not penetrating the interior release.

unscrew the collar? that black metal trim ring with a couple notches in it? Mine moves about 1/8 turn either way but that's it.
From looking at other posts & pics, I thought that collar comes out with the tumbler and then seperates. If the collar has to unscrew "before" pulling the tumbler, do the pins have to be inserted "before" you can unscrew it or does it matter? What do you grab the collar with? Large pliers or should it unscrew easily by hand? |
