C280 ATF change
Is the procedure for changing the ATF in a 1994 C280 the same as the other models? By removing the pan, is this releasing the fluid or is there a plug somewhere? Also, what are your thoughts on how often you should change the fluid? I'm a new owner of the car and it's coming up on it's 90k service. From what I can tell other than oil changes, the car has not been serviced for anything since it's 60k service.
Should I go ahead and follow the 90K service recomendations outlined in the service booklet? I plan to do as much servicing that I can myself. Thank you . A MB owner for 5 days now... |

Your car also has a drain on the torque converter. Rotate it slowly until the plug is at the bottom, and drain it too.

Congrats on your new purchase.
I would do what you said and do everythign that is listed in the maintenance booklet appropraite for the 90k service. I believe the recommended intervals for changes are very 30k miles.

OK, point me to the torque converter. You have to remember, I'm new to the MB! I would say my mechanical skill is medium. I'm also planning to replace the shift bushings. The 60K service report says they are worn out and I don't have anything that says they have been replaced.
Thanks |

ATF questions
Also, how can I determine which AT I have? When you order the filter, you have to specify either a 722.424, or 722.606, or 722.629 AT.
Don't you love guys like me... starting from square one. Thanks |

The torque converter is the round thing mounted to the flywheel of the engine at the front of the transmission.

Thanks Ali. You speak my language - "The round thing" etc. I wish I could find just some simple diagrams or photos showing the major areas of the power train, suspension and brakes with identifiers. Not having a service manual available for the C280 really puts us "DIY's" at a disadvantage. I guess maybe that's what MB wants. So we'll go to the dealer for everything.
