1996 E320 W210 Up/Down Idle-No Power
Started with up-n-down idle, sometimes cuts off. Now when you take off really doesn't want to go. It hesitates then goes, and low power. when it warms up it's drives alittle better. Codes are 101 and 170. Would like any input as to what it may be or where should I start?

I don't know what the codes mean, but it sounds like either a vacum leak, a bad mass air meter, or a bad throttle actuator.
Try a search on any of these topics.

Am doing this from memory so the exact verbiage will be off but the gist is:
PO101 - Mass or Vol air, out of range PO170 - Fuel Trim Malfunction bank 1 I think I would try cleaning the MAF with a spray cleaner made for that purpose first.

I had similar issues on the BMW. Unplug the O2 sensor and see if you get the power back. Unplugging it puts the computer into "open mode". If that works, replace the O2 sensor. The idle problem was caused by the idle control valve. I don't know if the MB has one, but on the Bimmer, it is a cylindrical object attached to the intake manifold. Take it off and spray carb cleaner in it. Shake it up and pour out the cleaner. You will be amazed at all the black junk in there.
Hope this helps...

The 96 E320 is like my 97 and doesn't have an idle control valve - it is all electronic. Please see my parallel thread, chasing down a similar issue: 1997 E320 M104 flat at low RPMs, backfiring?
I bought a can of MAF cleaner at lunch and am going to give it a try before dropping $300 on a new MAF.

Most folks believe carb or brake cleaner will fry a good MAF also. Use electrical contact cleaner or other cleaner made specifically for the MAF.

Thanks for all the input, I will pick-up some cleaner and try it and the o2 sensor check. Couldn't make anything worse, cars been great and I recently replaced the air filter. Has over 150k and runs very well. Will try those few tests, if all else fails. I 'm going to have to take it to the dealer once again, tired of those costly visits.
