sharp slapping sound !

Hi all

Thank you for allowing me on this forum
I live in the UK and own a 2001 C class 240.

There is a sharp knocking /slapping sound that has developed whilst the car is under heavy braking. This seems to come from around the drivers side engine area but I maybe wrong.

I have checked the wheels and tryes all seems fine, there are no loose bits hanging in the engine bay.

A local non mercedes garage tested it and says its the ABS mechanism failed.
The car brakes fine.
The sound is intermittent.
This weekend though after a three days of heavy rainfall, the BAS brake assist light has now come on and I am worried this is something big!!!

Any ideas on what this could be?

Thanks you in advance

Worried C class driver!

Having the TRACTION system scanned for codes would be a starting point.

If you post those codes we could help with diagnosis.

Have the front lower control arm bushings check for wear as well.

Ohhhhh my God!

Hi all

The BAS issue turned out to be due to a faulty switch only £15 plus fitting at £20. However all my suspension bushes are apparently worn out and I have a broken rear spring brought on by ...wait for it... me having fitted 255/35/18 lorinser alloy wheels and tyres at the back and 225/40/18 at the front. The garage said the C240 wasnt designed to handle such large wheels!!!Is that true?
He asked if I was sitting down before he would tell me how much to fix all this.....£1124.

I am gutted!

i find it amazing that the sellers of these large diameter wheels are allowed to sell them based only on whether they will fit without rubbing the fender.rule of thumb with mercedes is only one inch larger than stock.in germany the tuf requires that the title of the car be endorsed with non factory wheel type and specification but only if on the approved list.

Angry

I dont know what to say or think at the moment because whilst I was having my rear tyres swapped for new ones, I asked the tyre guy to check the rear springs (since the other garage had told me that i had a broken spring) and he could not see any damaged springs. I went under with him and using a bright torch, we inspected both rear springs - they are as good as new.
Now in the UK, we do have a legally required vehicle check called an MOT and the other garage actually failed me on 2 rear below legal limit tyres plus a rear broken spring!
I want to visit a main dealer now and get them checked then haul his ass to court if they are found to be ok.
Am back to square one - still have the slapping sound and a lighter wallet!

After visiting two independent garages, they cannot find anything wrong with my suspension springs! I am calling law enforcement first thing monday morning.

I seem to recall another thread with a complaint of a similar noise on hard braking. In that case it was worn engine/trans mounts that allowed the engine to shift forward and the fan was hitting something. Anyway, you might inspect the fan area WITH THE ENGINE OFF!! and see if there is any evidence of rubbing. And if I am right then you must send me beer.
