'94 S500 Oil Question
I recently purchased a '94 S500 (in March) with 76,000 miles on her (79,082 now) and was wondering about the type of oil for her. As far as I know, she has always used Castroil 20\50, and I was wondering if it would be advantagous to switch to a 'syn'oil? The engine runs great and have had NO problems, but I was told that 'syn' oil would be better for her. I was also told that she has too many miles on her to switch now. Opinions anyone? Thanks!!!

Boy, there are lots of opinions on this one; many quite vehement.
I basically think that any oil is fine, it's the regular changing that makes the difference. Despite much folklore to the contrary, when Consumer Reports tested various oils in a fleet of Taxi's, they found no real differences. And the 3000 mile rule is also fairly arbitrary. Up North here, I use Castrol 5W-30, nonsynthetic. HTH, Phil 1994 SL500 |

Thanks for the quick reply, Pleeson!! I guess you're right, the opinions on this one differs considerably. I bought the car in Florida and came back home to Mississippi, where the heat is pretty intense, so that's probably why they used the 'normal' oil, as opposed to the 'syn' stuff. Since I am not that well versed in oils, I'd better hush before I start an 'oil war,' or something!! Again, thanks for the reply!!!
