1983 mercedes 380sel

my 380sel will not start. if i depress the accelerator it will start and run fine , but when i release the pedal and it idles back down it will die. it seems to start right back up if i depress accelerator again, but it will not idle??? fuel filter possibly? THANKS KEVIN
