124 Fan Clutch Removal Tool - Dimensions
1995 E320. Fan Clutch requires special tool 103 589 0040 00. What is the diameter of the rod used for this tool. My understanding is it about 1 ft long. Any dimensions to fabricate this tool will be appriciated
Bearings shot on the fan pully and I need to remove the clutch. 215kmiles on the clock. Hoping to get to 250kmiles! Tom Latos |
I used a length of 3/16" steel rod, about 2 ft long for easier maneuvering. Put a 90 degree bend in one end, about 1 inch from the end. Use a flash light to look down into the back of the pulley on the drivers side and you can barely see the small hole it needs to fit into.

At one point, performance products used to sell this tool for real cheap.

I essentially did the same thing... I think I went 1/4" ....a little tougher to fit in the slot...but as you work the clutch around with the 8mm allen...it catches...
an inch may be too long... we had to adjust that a bit too.... it will become pretty obvious as you work it. |
Here's a link to Performance Product's tool page for the tool they sell for $16:

Thanks for the input. I picked up a 3/16 rod today on the way home from work. Will have at it tomorrow. I'll keep you updated on this latest MB adventure!
