124 Fan Clutch Removal Tool - Dimensions

1995 E320. Fan Clutch requires special tool 103 589 0040 00. What is the diameter of the rod used for this tool. My understanding is it about 1 ft long. Any dimensions to fabricate this tool will be appriciated

Bearings shot on the fan pully and I need to remove the clutch.

215kmiles on the clock. Hoping to get to 250kmiles!

I used a length of 3/16" steel rod, about 2 ft long for easier maneuvering. Put a 90 degree bend in one end, about 1 inch from the end. Use a flash light to look down into the back of the pulley on the drivers side and you can barely see the small hole it needs to fit into.

I essentially did the same thing... I think I went 1/4" ....a little tougher to fit in the slot...but as you work the clutch around with the 8mm allen...it catches...

an inch may be too long... we had to adjust that a bit too.... it will become pretty obvious as you work it.

Thanks for the input. I picked up a 3/16 rod today on the way home from work. Will have at it tomorrow. I'll keep you updated on this latest MB adventure!
