The correct coil for this car is filled with a black waxy substance and has a red plug sealing the coil. I'm guessing you have the correct part for the application. I'd check alternator function and look for the ground strap from the power steering bracket to the coil bracket. Other than that there has to be a high resistance in the system. A scope test would show the problem.
Good luck

I have ran across this problem before. The only fix I can recommend and it has worked for me on several occasions of the same problem. Replace the harness from the ignition box (both)

Hello people. First, Thomas, typing in ALL CAPS is considered ‘yelling’, just so you know, as it might piss off some people. But not me, of course.

Secondly, if your car’s ignition is like my earlier V-8 cars, and I’m 90% sure of it, as they didn’t go to the ignition maps in 83….

CHECK THE STINKIN' BALLAST RESISTORS !!! ---- ---- ----

My Bug used to eat coils for lunch. Finally traced it to the combination of the steel braided cables I installed that were arcing, as well as the resistors were bad as well. The arcing would burn out the resistors to the point that I would have to keep a couple of spare coils and resistors whenever I went on a long trip...
