W124 Wagon Rear End Noise - Opinions? - PeachParts Mercedes-Benz Forum

My 1995 E320 Wagon ( 150,000 miles ) Has developed what I can best describe as an intermitent "rumbling" in the right rear. It does not seem to be speed specific, but at times is much louder than others. It is especially noticable when the ambient temperature is 80+ degrees. I was thinking wheel bearing, but I am not so sure. As I stated, sometimes it is not audible at all, other times it is highly irritating. It does not squeal as a wheel bearing typcially does.

Any takers?

First and easiest thing to check is rubber donuts holding up the muffler.

Could be a tire starting to separate, bad flex disc, muffler/resonator. Process of elimination. Good luck, it is a great car.

It has been a great car thus far. It is my daily driver, ( 140 miles / day ). It seems to be a much more "solid" car than my 2005 E320 Wagon, that I have had since new. It is definitely coming from the rear of the car. The exhaust system is new, new hangers as well. I have had the tires rotated since the noise began, and, it did not make any difference. I am "blogging" the service of the W124 if anyone is interested.... The sound is defintely a "grumbling" rotational sound.

Do check the flex disc's, you don't want those to fail.

Turns out, it was the right-rear wheel bearing. What a HUGE difference it made having that replaced. The car seems so much quieter. Apparently, from everything I read on here, I was certainly better off having that job done for me as opposed to taking it on myself.
