I believe my 500E may have overheated and shutdown but the temp guage was claiming otherwise and thus I have reason to believe that my temp gauge (or temp sensor) is not functioning properly.

I've narrated what had occured on the following thread: http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/mercedes-benz-performance-paddock/20221-anyone-have-v8-mb-overheat.html#post101970

I was wondering if anyone can describe how an MB V8 behaves when overheating (loss of power? poor idle? lower idle rpm? etc.) or if you could confirm that it was indeed overheating.

Many thanks.

I would get the gauge working properly. It is likely that the engine was running warm, but I doubt it stalled from severe overheating. I would suspect the load from the A.C or the throttle actuator made it quit.

Have the coolig system/ gauge checked ASAP!

It is scheduled for a visit to the shop this weekend, together with the replacement of the lower control arm bushings I was waiting for. In the meantime, I haven't been using the car.

The reason why I thought the car was overheating is that after stuttering for sometime and after it got progressively worse, the engine seems to have lost power and had gone into some sort of "limp mode."

Is it meant to do this when it overheats? Btw, when the engine finally cut off, the a/c had been off for quite some time already...

You mention going into "limp home" mode. My 400E has done this twice, both times when the ASR light went on. The throttle has a lot of dead travel (i.e. you have to press it about halfway down before any response). I shut the car off, immediately restarted it, and all was well. These are symptoms of the throttle body actuator acting up. Was your ASR light on when you experienced this? If not, I'd wonder about the overvoltage protection relay.

That happened to me twice as well...

...both times when I mash the pedal, the car goes into ASR, and I back off immediately (i.e. due to an oncoming car when overtaking, etc.)

I was driving too slow (traffic was horrendous) to activate ASR in any shape, way or form. ASR light went on only when the engine died...well, along of course with all the other idiot lights...
